Orofacial Myology Overview

Orofacial Myology is a type of physical therapy that works with muscles of the face, jaw lips and tongue to achieve correct growth and development. OM also corrects imbalances in muscle function which if left untreated can lead to a number of dysfunctional disorders and parafunctional habits. Common adult and child problems associated with these disorders are:

Tongue thrust
Open mouth breathing
Open bite/malocclusion
Overjet
Thumb sucking
Nail or lip biting
Pacifier habits
High narrow palatal arch
Lip wedging
Rest Postures
Ankyloglossia (tongue tied)
TMD (muscular dysfunction)
Open mouth rest posture
Chronic cheek biting
Short upper lip
Drooling

Correction and elimination of these behaviors are achieved through exercises performed by the patient for five minutes three times a day. Photos and measurements are taken routinely to mark improvement. Lasting results are often dramatic and can occur within a three to four month period.
